Untitled (Goggles)

Hey looky! A new artwork!

This has been sitting around in my apartment for a few weeks now, just waiting for me to document it and post about it. (You might notice some resemblances with the work in progress I posted about some time ago. Guess why? It’s done!)

This collage has a very rough and unfinished feel to it. There are lots of black and white blotches on it. So it took me some time to figure out whether or not I wanted to refine it some more or if it should be a “finished but unfinished” work. Like many other pieces, the time it spent sitting there made the decision for me.

The blotches make for a very atmospheric work. Much like the piece on the right,jonathan-schnapp-untitled-bear-2010 I have to fight my own desire to load up every single square inch with information to let space just exist as space.

But with the different collaged elements left unsmoothed, there is a definite triangular composition. The woman is gazing to the left at what is to come. But she doesn’t look quite prepared, does she? Sure, she’s got goggles on, as if she’s getting ready for incoming dust, bugs, shrapnel, or whatever, but she’s also holding her hand up as if to say “Hang on! Not yet!”

To her left she’s faced with two options: a boat and a man with his back turned. Both are set in a lake setting, the water seemingly spilling over to the woman’s location as she is surrounded by people with umbrellas. What will she choose? The boat could be a means to escape, but means isolation. The man would be less lonely but he doesn’t seem interested at all. He’s also… upside down? The tension is painful.

On top of a new collage, I have a newsy bit for you all! Tomorrow, I’m leaving for Massachusetts to go teach art classes at a summer camp! I’m very excited but also a bit scared at leaving! I hope to come back with all sorts of memories and photos to share. Posts will be, well… let’s face it, as unfrequent as ever! Have a great summer everyone!
